September Workshops: Beekeeping and Organic Soil Fertility

Forest Farm Peace Garden is excited to be hosting two more free workshops as part of our “Orchard Skills” programme. One Sunday will be an introduction to bee-keeping, and the next Sunday we will be learning about organic fertility techniques. Past workshops have been very popular, so please book in advance asap by contacting info (at) forestfarmpeacegarden.org, specifying which workshop you would like to attend, your name, email address and which borough you live in.

Participants are asked to bring a packed lunch, and wear shoes and clothing suitable for being outdoors. For more information, contact info (at) forestfarmpeacegarden.org, 07913089979.

Intro to Bee-keeping Workshop
Sunday 2 September 2012, 10.30am – 4pm
Forest Farm Peace Garden, Hazelbrouck Gardens, Hainault, IG6 2XL

Bees are absolutely crucial to the ecosystem- they pollinate plants and trees, making it possible for us to have food, flowers and other good things. The inspiring upsurge in community gardens in London means we also need to support our bee population- and expert urban beekeeper Andy Casson from East London Honey is running a workshop to inspire and equip the bee-curious! Learn about how bee-keeping works, peek inside the Forest Farm apiary, and get tips on supporting local bee populations.

This is a FREE workshop, but advance registration is crucial as participation is limited by the number of bee suits we have.

Green Manures and Liquid Feeds Workshop
Sunday 9 September 2012, 10.30am – 4pm
Forest Farm Peace Garden, Hazelbrouck Gardens, Hainault, IG6 2XL

Organic and permaculture food-growing employs a range of techniques to promote soil fertility without relying on chemical fertilisers. Two excellent methods for this are using green manures- growing cover crops which replace nutrients in the soil, and liquid feeds- fertilisers made out of soaking plants such as comfrey in water. Two experienced growers from OrganicLea will be running the training.

This is a FREE workshop, but advance registration is crucial, and donations much appreciated.
