Join our therapeutic gardening programme as a Buddy volunteer

We are recruiting prospective volunteers for our therapeutic gardening  programme, working with mental health service users and people with learning disabilities at our community gardening project.

We run a therapeutic volunteering programme, offering mental health service users and others an opportunity to work outdoors in a community setting.  Our team of Buddy volunteers work alongside these supported volunteers, helping them to participate in our gardening activities and providing guidance and reassurance. We are hoping to expand the programme and we are now looking for new volunteers who are interested in becoming Buddies.

We are currently applying for funding in order to recruit up to 12 new volunteers with an interest in gardening and mental health. We will ask interested people to attend as regular volunteers about once a week over winter (Wednesdays and Fridays), getting to know us and learning how the Garden works.  We will then invite interested and suitable volunteers to attend a four or five day training course in February/March and become Buddy volunteers.  Buddies are asked to volunteer on a regular basis for at least 6-8 months after their training is completed.

The role is suitable for people looking for experience of working in mental health or other social care settings; people with previous
experience of this who would like to contribute to a community project; or anyone with good communication skills who’s enthusiastic about working with people.  We especially welcome people with past experience of mental illness who would like to work with and support people with similar problems.  Previous gardening experience isn’t necessary as long as you enjoy being outdoors and are interested and willing to learn.  We provide initial and follow-up training and regular staff support and supervision for Buddy volunteers.

If you may be interested in participating in this programme, read more about the background here.
